Flat Feet in Kids and Young Athletes

Flat feet, or fallen arches, are common in children and young athletes, where the arch of the foot collapses, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. This condition can be hereditary or develop because of obesity, lack of muscle tone, or improper footwear. Symptoms often include foot pain, fatigue, and difficulty participating in sports or physical activities. Children may also complain of discomfort in their legs or knees due to altered gait mechanics from flat feet. Treatment typically starts with supportive footwear and custom orthotics to provide better arch support. Stretching and strengthening exercises can also help improve foot function. A podiatrist specializes in assessing and treating flat feet, offering personalized care and guidance for young athletes. If your child is experiencing symptoms of flat feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist. They can provide an accurate diagnosis and create a tailored treatment plan to enhance your child's athletic performance.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Front Range Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

The Odd Sensation of a Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma, or interdigital neuroma, is a painful condition caused by the thickening of tissue surrounding one of the nerves in the midfoot, often between the third and fourth toes. This irritation results from nerve compression, frequently due to repetitive stress or pressure from wearing tight or high-heeled shoes. The condition can feel like a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot, often radiating to the toes. Some patients describe it as feeling as though they are standing on a pebble, or having a clicking sensation. Risk factors include high-impact activities like running, foot deformities such as bunions or flat feet, and poor footwear choices. Diagnosis often involves a physical exam, an ultrasound, or an MRI scan. Treatment ranges from modifying footwear and orthotics to corticosteroid injections or, in severe cases, surgical removal of the affected nerve tissue. If you have this odd and painful sensation in your foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact one of our podiatrists of Front Range Podiatry. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. Managing Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis resulting in sudden, severe pain, redness, and swelling that often affects the big toe. It occurs when uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, forming crystals in the joints. Common causes include a diet high in purines, which are found in red meat, seafood, and alcohol. Obesity, and certain medical conditions, like hypertension, may also be factors. Symptoms of gout typically appear suddenly, often at night, and can last for days. While the intense pain can subside, recurrent attacks may occur, leading to chronic discomfort. Treatment options include medications to manage pain and inflammation, lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments, and maintaining a healthy weight. A podiatrist can play a key role in managing gout by providing a personalized care plan, advising on footwear choices to reduce joint stress, and recommending targeted exercises to improve mobility. If you are experiencing symptoms of gout, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for expert guidance and support.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
